empath

I had the strangest dream as I napped this afternoon.  In it I was shown a book that was handmade at the time for an as yet to be born infant.  The author of the book, a grandmother, had died before the child was born.  The book now discovered some months later brought both joy to the mother of the infant child (the dead woman’s daughter) and also a profound grief that her mother hadn’t the opportunity to see the child born.

Quite suddenly I was the one experiencing it all.  The pain of this moment became so intense and overwhelming it burned deep into my chest and I began to choke on my own sobs.  Somehow I was feeling her grief just as intimately as though it were my own.   It was the sort of overwhelming anguish I had when my own mother passed years ago.  The kind you think you could not possibly live through because the pain is so great.

I began to gasp for breath, so choked was I from the sobs erupting within me.  I struggled to awaken so that I could breathe.   It was then that I felt a loving hand on my chest that pushed me back.  It was the firm comforting hand of someone very dear and precious to me.  I wondered if perhaps it was my own mother but I do not know.  I was told that this grief was not my own; that it was another’s to bear.   I was then able to release it.  And when I did I awakened fully.

I began to search my mind for the owner of this pain.  Could it have been the coworker whose mother is dying?  Perhaps it was a neighbor somewhere close.  It could possibly have been someone I have never met.   What was very clear to me though was that I had just shared a very intimate personal experience.  With whom I do not know.   It was not simply a dream in which the details evaporate shortly after awakening.   The vivid Technicolor experience remains still…as does the soft ache in my chest.

I am a nurse.  It is my calling.  I suppose because I am, it is possible I am somewhat of an empath.   I believe that to be a healer, one has to be to a degree.  I can’t say that I am or that it is what this experience truly was.  What I do know about myself is that I am quite intuitive.  If I pay attention and stay tuned into the universe, I can pick up very subtle cues.  I find it interesting that the older I get the more intuition I seem to possess.  It is not for an effort because it just seems to come.   Maybe it is just life experience.

When I was a flight nurse especially, I had to be keenly aware of my environment at all times.  I was so honed in that I frequently had what I consider ESP type of experiences.  This was in truth a finely honed intuition.   When I became more confident in it and myself, I trusted these experiences more.  It was interesting to me that when I was no longer flying and thus didn’t need to stay as dialed in, this ability left me for quite a long time.   It returns when I need.

There is so much of our world that we cannot see with our eyes.   We disregard it because it otherwise cannot possibly be real.  What we experience as our reality is not exactly the same as another’s.  Whose to say the shade of green that I see is the exact shade that you see?  Perhaps the veil that obscures our vision to the universe beyond is more delicate and fragile than we perceive.  I wonder if when we are open, in those rare precious moments, it parts for us to see.

  2. I can totally relate. I've been an empath my whole life. I thought I was just a very emotional child. Some day I hope we can sit down, share a bottle of wine and share our stories. :-)

all hallows eve

it is the last day of october...all hallows eve.   it is chilly as i sit on my deck soaking up the last warming rays of autumn.  already this week we’ve had a warning of snow.  a degree or so colder would have left my world covered in white softness.  instead we got bone chilling rain.  today though it is bright.  the mountains pop with vivid yellows oranges and reds.  the air teases a hint of someones wood burning stove and of fallen leaves.   a little black feral kitten tugs at my feet for attention.  an occasional nip on my toes reminds me that he is wild.  a neighbor gave him a name and put a collar on him to make him less so.  and though he is sweet the scratch on my toe reminds me that he is still a product of raw nature.  i am enjoying his company as i sit here and write.  it amuses me how cats vie for attentions when the focus is not on them.  in fact i came outside because my own was rubbing he...

The Cicada

For a few weeks now I have had numerous brief encounters with a cicada who moved into my backyard.  I had seen it stuck to the side of my house and the dog took notice too.  Coming home one evening at dusk, I stepped up to the backdoor fumbling with my keys.  A sudden squealing protest came up around me.  It was very like that coming from a cat after it’s tail is stepped on.  I was confused because looking around I saw nothing.  That protest however became more frantic as nanoseconds passed.   Finally I moved my foot to take a wider view when out from under it came the little cicada.  Still protesting, it popped onto it’s back, then righted itself, then took off flying in a short loop that crashed back into me, bumped off and another short directed loop until it had made three aggressive passes at me and flown off for good.  I had to giggle at it's indignation.  And then I marveled that an insect made such a mammalian fuss. ...

Discharged With Honor

I've been thinking about my friend Nancy today. I’ve been sorting though a box of papers that had collected and found a business card she’d given me years ago.   Last month I went to her memorial service. It was, for the most part a moving tribute to her life.   Intermixed where the funereal recitations of the Christian pastor. I tuned out the bits of empty rhetoric that just didn't seem to fit her and listened to those that did. You see Nancy was one-of-a-kind.   She was an irreverent soul with a wicked smile and a heart of gold. Nancy was a nurse. Several weeks before her death I had called her on the phone about a patient consult. She was a wound ostomy specialist.   She told me I'd just caught her as she was heading out the door. She was pretty ill and had a pneumonia that she said came upon her quite suddenly. A few days later she was in hospital. I happened upon her in the hospital elevator a week later looking rather peaked and gaunt.   We talk...
