something wicked this way comes

letter to a friend:

thank you for sharing this with me.  you do write very well.  i wonder it we have not dug ourselves a hole so deep that we are now unable of crawl out of it.  i doubt we can even find our way back to the values of our grandparents era that seemed so much gentler and kinder then.  i realize that civil rights were not yet born and that this genteel world was selective.  i doubt i could have tolerated living then knowing what i do now.
still FDR was a hero to my great grandmother because of his social reforms.  it is a shame that he died before his second bill of rights came to fruition.  our world might have been much different in that case.  i read recently that social security disability funding is in dire straits because of the budget and that there may be no such thing in the near future. not to mention social security for retirements probably going away shortly after...  FDR would roll over in his grave.
obamas presidential campaign was platformed on the hopes for a brighter more hopeful and thus less cynical world.  it seems the entanglements of the previous administration have kept him too busy fixing messes of the big money institutions and wars in foreign lands to heal our own ailing country.  i fear the new power shift is so extreme in its ideology that it will hobble the civil rights so hard won over these past many years and send us into a right-wing authoritarianism that will cripple us further.
funny how the tea partiers tout preserving liberty and freedom while taking it from its citizens....  progress made over dadt and doma with be the first to fall to its self-righteous sword.  the leaders of this movement seem more interested in shoving their religious and moral values down our throats...  i read that ron paul had a big ol’ texas bash recently that included a strong religious element but plainly excluded catholics jews and other spiritual leaders.  it was taken as a slap in the face "i dont give a damn what anyone else thinks."  too big for his britches already... i think if these groups gain true purchase in the political arena then we can expect to go far backwards in social justice and personal freedom.
your solution for a simpler tax structure...i fear that the powerful who control money and bathe in their own greed have corrupted us to the extent that we are doomed to extinction.  just as in rome our greatness is in danger of self destruction by the glut of the powerful.  shame on us.  the only thing that might save us is the education and activism of each and every voting citizen.  i think though that it may be a case of continuously beating the dog until he loses his will.  i sincerely hope ours is not lost.
normally i try in all things to slant a positive spin.  i am afraid you have caught my achilles heel.  i feel fear and a near panic for our future.  i feel shame for what we have become.  i feel hopeless to do anything about it.  i do know that i have a gift with words.  i do know that i have a voice.  i do know that i should and must use it.  i fervently hope that others will use theirs as well.  perhaps then we can get off this dizzying merry-go-round.

  1. Please increase this font size as I am old.

I have mixed/differing opinions of this of which you spoke.

I grow tired of every administration blaming the previous.. too convenient.

My thoughts on this are much deeper than I care to go, but God Bless the USA!

all hallows eve

it is the last day of october...all hallows eve.   it is chilly as i sit on my deck soaking up the last warming rays of autumn.  already this week we’ve had a warning of snow.  a degree or so colder would have left my world covered in white softness.  instead we got bone chilling rain.  today though it is bright.  the mountains pop with vivid yellows oranges and reds.  the air teases a hint of someones wood burning stove and of fallen leaves.   a little black feral kitten tugs at my feet for attention.  an occasional nip on my toes reminds me that he is wild.  a neighbor gave him a name and put a collar on him to make him less so.  and though he is sweet the scratch on my toe reminds me that he is still a product of raw nature.  i am enjoying his company as i sit here and write.  it amuses me how cats vie for attentions when the focus is not on them.  in fact i came outside because my own was rubbing he...

The Cicada

For a few weeks now I have had numerous brief encounters with a cicada who moved into my backyard.  I had seen it stuck to the side of my house and the dog took notice too.  Coming home one evening at dusk, I stepped up to the backdoor fumbling with my keys.  A sudden squealing protest came up around me.  It was very like that coming from a cat after it’s tail is stepped on.  I was confused because looking around I saw nothing.  That protest however became more frantic as nanoseconds passed.   Finally I moved my foot to take a wider view when out from under it came the little cicada.  Still protesting, it popped onto it’s back, then righted itself, then took off flying in a short loop that crashed back into me, bumped off and another short directed loop until it had made three aggressive passes at me and flown off for good.  I had to giggle at it's indignation.  And then I marveled that an insect made such a mammalian fuss. ...

Discharged With Honor

I've been thinking about my friend Nancy today. I’ve been sorting though a box of papers that had collected and found a business card she’d given me years ago.   Last month I went to her memorial service. It was, for the most part a moving tribute to her life.   Intermixed where the funereal recitations of the Christian pastor. I tuned out the bits of empty rhetoric that just didn't seem to fit her and listened to those that did. You see Nancy was one-of-a-kind.   She was an irreverent soul with a wicked smile and a heart of gold. Nancy was a nurse. Several weeks before her death I had called her on the phone about a patient consult. She was a wound ostomy specialist.   She told me I'd just caught her as she was heading out the door. She was pretty ill and had a pneumonia that she said came upon her quite suddenly. A few days later she was in hospital. I happened upon her in the hospital elevator a week later looking rather peaked and gaunt.   We talk...
